    About this recipe

You've most likely experienced a traditional Italian sandwich on a substantial bun from your neighborhood sub shop, whether you refer to it as a hoagie, grinder, or submarine sandwich.

Typically, an Italian sub consists of an Italian baguette filled with provolone cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, red onions, pepperoncini peppers, and deli meats such as sliced turkey, and genoa salami. Typically, a straightforward, delectable Italian dressing—basically a vinegar vinaigrette—accompanies it.

Heart-healthy extra virgin olive oil and incredibly basic items that you can probably get at your local grocery shop or already have in your cabinet are used in this recipe. Additionally, whipping it up takes less than five minutes.

You may top your favorite salads with it or put it on handmade Italian subs, which are delicious! It's a really adaptable salad dressing that, in my opinion, fulfills every need.

    Ingredients

This best italian sub dressing recipe only requires simple ingredients. The full proportions are listed on the printable recipe card below.

Ingredients for Italian sub dressing in small bowls on a countertop with labels.
    • Extra virgin olive oil: Olive oil is a great addition to salad dressings since it contains heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and a lot of taste. I enjoy Graza's squeeze bottle version.
    • Vinegar is the norm for sub dressing, but you can use whichever vinegar you choose. White vinegar, balsamic vinegar, and even apple cider vinegar will all work.
    • Italian seasoning: Since it's an Italian dressing, we're going to use Italian seasoning!
    • Honey: If you want to make this dressing fully sugar-free, omit the honey. I prefer to add a small amount to reduce the acidity of the vinegar.
    • Salt and pepper.

    2. That's all. Drizzle the dressing over your cold cuts, salads, or Italian sub sandwiches, and dig in! A spoon, sandwiches, and a tiny glass jar of Italian submarine dressing.

    Recipe Tips and Variations

    • Add a tiny clove of fresh garlic to create a spicy vinaigrette.
    • Use this Grinder Salad Recipe to transform your Italian cold cut subs into a salad.
    • Emulsify your dressing quickly and effectively by making a large quantity in a food processor.
    • Add some red pepper flakes or hot sauce to give it a bite.
    • Make use of your preferred vinegar! Any vinegar you like and have on hand will work well in this foundation recipe.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of oil is best on an Italian sub?

The most common and ideal option for a sub is olive oil. A high-quality olive oil will give it a noticeable peppery taste and a hint of fruitiness.

What kind of vinegar is best on an Italian sub?

Because of its sharp acidity and clear taste, plain white vinegar is popular and a suitable option. White and red vinegars are also excellent options because they give the dish more depth. If you enjoy its sweet flavor, balsamic vinegar is good. Since they all add acidity that helps cut through the richness of the cold meats, almost any type of vinegar would work in a pinch.

Where did the name Italian Sub come from?

Giovanni Amato created the Italian Sub, often referred to as the Italian Sandwich, in Portland, Maine, in 1902.

What is the difference between Italian Dressing and Sub Sauce?

Not much, really, except from marketing. The ingredients used in sub sauce are identical to those used in Italian dressing. Ninety-five percent of the time, they are the same, while some businesses may make minor changes to set themselves apart. If you're unsure of what to use for your Italian sub, just take that bottle of Italian dressing out of the refrigerator or follow our recipe, which is listed above, and you're set to go!
