Ingredients and Substitutions
This Garlic Butter Sauce recipe only requires a few ingredients. The full proportions are listed on the printable recipe card below.
- Butter is the primary component here. Olive oil will work in a pinch, but it will not have the same flavor. I prefer unsalted butter so that I can control the sodium level myself.
- Fresh Parsley - Fresh herbs will provide a delightful, fresh flavor. Dried parsley will also work, but the flavor will be slightly different. If you use dried parsley, use about half the amount because the flavor is more intense. Chives or fresh thyme would also be great in this dish.
- Garlic - I prefer finely minced fresh garlic, but you may use ¾ teaspoon garlic powder instead. Jarred minced garlic works great, but it lacks the flavor of freshly minced garlic.
- Kosher Salt - I prefer kosher salt. When using table salt, it is simple to oversalt a dish; however, Kosher salt's bigger granules make it easier to distribute without adding too much.
Instructions
- Put the ingredients in a small saucepan and heat it to medium-low.
- Cook, stirring, until the butter melts. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Use it as a tasty bread dipping sauce or toss it with your preferred pasta or seafood!
Tips
- This recipe only takes a few minutes to prepare, and it's crucial to cook it over medium-low heat to prevent the garlic from burning. After adding the garlic, simply mix it for around one minute until it starts to smell fragrant. If you continue, you run the risk of the sauce being ruined by the burning garlic.
- For added zest, squeeze in some lemon juice and season with a dash of black pepper! This butter garlic sauce will take on a new depth with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice (or even a little zest!) and go great with grilled fish or poultry. To give the tastes even more depth, you can also add a half teaspoon or more of Dijon mustard or your other spices.
- If you prefer a creamy garlic butter than a sauce, simply mix the garlic, parsley, and a touch of salt with room-temperature butter. This will provide the ideal recipe for garlic butter that you can use to spread on your preferred freshly baked bread.
How to Use Garlic Butter
This garlic butter may be used for anything! You can use butter and garlic with virtually anything, so get creative. Tossing this garlic herb butter with linguine or using it as a garlic butter dipping sauce for pizza crust is one of my favorite uses, but you can also use it with:
- Legs of crabs
- Steak
- Beef burgers
- Kabobs
- Lobster tails
- Shrimp
- Fish
- Vegetables
- Chicken

Yes, but homemade will always taste better! Almost invariably, homemade food is superior and much fresher. Additionally, it's so simple to construct that assembling it takes less time than purchasing it.
It's quite simple to make garlic butter sauce for pasta. Just put the ingredients in a skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter, mince the garlic, and stir until everything is aromatic.
Make-Ahead, Storage, Freezing, and Reheating
- Prepare ahead of time: Garlic butter sauce is an easy dish to have on hand and will keep in the refrigerator until you need it.
- Storage: Keep for up to a week in the refrigerator in an airtight container or jar.
- Freezing: You can freeze this recipe for up to three months if you double or triple it. After letting the garlic butter sauce cool, put it in a large Ziploc bag that may be frozen. To ensure that it freezes in an equal layer, seal the Ziploc bag and put it flat in the freezer. Just cut or break off as much as you need to use, then put the remainder back in the freezer.
- Reheating: If using garlic butter as a spread, reheat it by spreading it out at room temperature; alternatively, place the necessary quantity in a small saucepan and reheat it on the stove top over medium-low heat until the sauce has melted and well warmed. You may also reheat it in the microwave, but I don't advise doing so because the butter will heat up too quickly and probably burst everywhere.
