This Cajun Alfredo sauce can be used with any kind of pasta, including penne and fettuccine. The best part is that you can leave it vegetarian or add all of your favorite toppings, including shrimp, chicken, or sausage.
My beloved flourless Alfredo sauce serves as the foundation for this recipe, but I've added some extra flavor layers that, in my opinion, really bring out the Cajun flavors.

🌟Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Big Flavor: The standout component of any superb Cajun spice blend is unquestionably the smoked paprika. However, I've also included some zest from lemon for a cool variation.
- Quick-To-assemble: This fiery Alfredo takes less than 15 minutes to prepare!
- Flourless: a naturally gluten-free recipe that doesn't require a laborious roux.
🧾 Ingredients Needed
As much as the ingredients are pretty much simple, I've made a couple of notes regarding some of them below.
- Please use unsalted butter. You want to be able to control the sodium level because parmesan is highly salted and many Cajun spice combinations contain salt.
- Heavy Cream: Instead of using milk or half-and-half, use regular heavy whipping cream. There will be too little sauce.
- Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese: For optimal results, use freshly ground cheese—not shredded or shelf-stable.
- Lemon Zest: To obtain that delightful citrus note without running the risk of a curdled sauce, we're merely going to use the zest of the lemon.
See the recipe card below for precise ingredients and measurements.
📖 Variations
This rich and creamy alfredo sauce is perfect on its own. Different options for flavoring the sauce, to what toppings to serve the Cajun Alfredo Sauce will all make a huge difference in the end! like chicken, shrimp, turkey, or even some sausage. Here are some of the variations ideas you can try.
- Seafood Twist: Replace chicken with shrimp for a Cajun Shrimp Alfredo.
- Vegetarian Option: Skip the chicken and add bell peppers, zucchini noodles, or your favorite vegetables.
- Spice Level: Adjust the cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes to your preferred level of heat.
- Andouille Sausage: Add sliced andouille sausage for an extra layer of Cajun flavor.
👩🏻🍳 How to Make
In this section, I can't wait to show you how easy it is to make this cajun alfredo sauce pasta.
I make it by preparing the sauce first and then mixing everything with it at the end, but I'll give you some pointers if you want to step things up a notch.
*Be sure to check the recipe card down below for the full ingredients list & instructions!*
STEP 1
Prepare the Pasta. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt. Cook pasta until al dente, according to package instructions.
STEP 2
Cook the Chicken. Season the chicken breasts with Cajun seasoning. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat olive oil.
TIP: Don't overcook the pasta, it can be very starchy and you don't want that in your meal! just cook it according to the packaging (Aldente).
STEP 3
Heat the butter until it becomes foamy and the solid white milk begins to bubble. Make sure to add the cream before it browns and cook over low heat to prevent the burning of the butter.
STEP 4
Add salt now if your Cajun spice is unsalted, and stir in the heavy cream. Simmer it for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring constantly, until it coats the back of a spoon without becoming too thick.
TIP: Some cajun seasonings can be very salty, so keep an eye on it and taste your sauce as you go.
STEP 5
Take the sauce from the stove and add the zest of the lemon. Whisk in the parmesan cheese little by little until it melts and becomes smooth.
🥣 How to Serve
I usually pour this Cajun cream sauce with some shrimp or chicken over my gluten-free pasta dish. I enjoy adding a few vegetables, such as chopped blanched green beans or steamed broccoli.
However, there are a ton of more delectable uses! It could serve as the foundation for baked macaroni and cheese.
For an immediate taste boost, drizzle it over fish, grilled poultry, or roasted vegetables. Make a white pizza using it as the sauce. Mix it with grits or creamy polenta. It even works wonderfully as a dipping sauce for handmade biscuits without gluten.
You could also serve it with chicken breast such as my delicious crispy chicken parmesan, or some grilled chicken like this grilled buffalo chicken.
💭 Recipe Pro Tips
- As you add the parmesan cheese, stir the sauce regularly to maintain a smooth texture and avoid clumps.
❄️ Storage and Freezer Instructions
If you have any sauce left over, put it in the refrigerator for up to three days in an airtight container. Reheat the sauce slowly over low heat, thinning up if needed with a little milk or cream. To keep the sauce from splitting, don't boil it.
