Why We Love Crockpot Steak and Potatoes
This simple dinner is just what you need if you've ever felt that making steak was too much work or too hard! For incredibly soft and delicate steak and potatoes, let the crockpot handle everything.
Simple ingredients like stew steak meat, onion soup mix, and whole baby potatoes that are thrown straight into the slow cooker make this complete dinner just require a few minutes of preparation.
Main Ingredients
- Baby potatoes - For this steak supper, you'll need a 1.5-pound bag. Baby potatoes are available in both red and yellow varieties; use whichever you want. If desired, chop russet potatoes into large pieces (comparable in size to baby potatoes).
- Steak Cubes or Stew Meat - I prefer to use 1 pound of stew meat because it is a harder piece of meat that turns very tender in the crock pot. It's already sliced into pieces, so there's no need for any preparation! However, you can use any cut of steak you choose, such as chuck steak, skirt steak, or flank steak.
- Beef broth
- Onion - A yellow or white onion is the best choice. Make sure it has been finely chopped into small bits.
- Garlic - Use freshly minced or pressed garlic cloves, jarred garlic, or garlic paste.
- Onion Soup Mix Pack
- Steak Seasoning - This is a dried seasoning that can be found alongside other dried spice blends. Choose your favorite and use it!
How to Make Steak and Potatoes in the Crockpot
Fill the bottom of the crockpot with the baby potatoes, steak meat, beef broth, onion, garlic, onion soup mix, and steak spice. Stir everything well.
Cover and cook for 7 to 8 hours on LOW heat.
Serve the meat and potatoes over your preferred carbohydrate, such as mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, using a slotted spoon. Top with a spoonful of the gravy mixture or au jus.
What Is The Best Steak To Use For Slow Cooker Steak and Potatoes?
This recipe can be made with a variety of steak types! Since stew meat is already sliced up, it's a simple option. However, you may also use different cuts like round steak, chuck steak, flat iron steak, top sirloin steak, rib eye steak, or chuck roast.
Serving Suggestions
This delectable recipe is ideal for serving over egg noodles or cooked rice of your choice. My family enjoys it as is because it is already a big meal, and the steak and potatoes are juicy and tender.
To make it a complete and robust meal, serve it with green beans, roasted parmesan Brussels sprouts, or honey butter corn.
Because the potatoes are already in the recipe, I don't see the necessity to serve it with a starch or carb. I like to serve it with some fresh roasted veggies or a simple salad for a well-balanced meal.
Recipe Tips
- Cut Steak into Bite-Sized chunks: Stew meat is already cut into larger chunks, thus no preparation is required when using it. You can use another steak cut and chop it into larger, 1 to 2-inch chunks (similar to stew meat size).
- Steak Seasoning: I prefer the Kinder brand steak seasoning, but you can substitute your preferred steak seasoning blend, such as Montreal steak seasoning or Weber steak seasoning. Choose your favorite seasoning blend and use it instead.
- Baby potatoes are sold in grocery stores in little bags (1.5 ponds). Just wash the potatoes, strip off any rotten skin, and place them whole in the crockpot. If you're using regular-sized potatoes (such as russet potatoes), slice them into larger pieces that are comparable in size to baby potatoes.
- Cooking Tip: Cooking the beef all day in the slow cooker will ensure that it reaches the proper temperature. I enjoy cooking steak in the slow cooker for hours because it becomes extremely tender and falls apart! If you're concerned, simply use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the steaks before serving.
- Make Gravy: If you want the liquid to be thicker, more like gravy, combine ¼ cup water and ¼ cornstarch (with a fork) to produce a thin paste. Add this to the crockpot and stir with a whisk. Put the meat and potatoes back in and simmer for around 30 minutes. Remove the meat and potatoes before adding and whisking in the cornstarch slurry for the gravy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Although it's not necessary, we prefer to brown the steak cubes before adding them to the slow cooker since it adds texture and taste.
We prefer to use chuck roast, round steak, or sirloin steak and chop it into tiny, bite-sized pieces. Another option is to use pre-cut beef stew meat, which will save you a step.
Keep leftovers in the fridge for up to five or six days in an airtight container.
You can either microwave leftovers or put them in a baking dish and reheat them at 350 degrees in a preheated oven.
For up to three months, the steak will keep well in a freezer-safe container. After thawing, the potatoes might not cook as well.
