This Cajun Alfredo sauce can be used with any kind of pasta, including penne and fettuccine. The best part is that you can leave it vegetarian or add all of your favorite toppings, including shrimp, chicken, or chicken sausage.

    🌟Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Big Flavor: The standout component of any superb Cajun spice blend is unquestionably the smoked paprika. However, I've also included some zest from lemon for a cool variation.
    • Quick-To-assemble: This fiery Alfredo takes less than 15 minutes to prepare!
    • Flourless: a naturally gluten-free recipe that doesn't require a laborious roux.
    • So Versatile: One taste and you'll want to spoon this creamy, spicy sauce over everything, from pasta to grilled chicken and roasted veggies.

    🧾 Ingredients Needed

As much as the ingredients are pretty much simple, I've made a couple of notes regarding some of them below.

Ingredients to make cajun alfredo sauce on countertop.
    • Please use unsalted butter. You want to be able to control the sodium level because parmesan is highly salted and many Cajun spice combinations contain salt.
    • Heavy Cream: Use regular heavy whipping cream for the richest, thickest sauce. Milk or half-and-half make a thinner sauce (see the FAQ below).
    • Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese: For optimal results, use freshly grated cheese, not pre-shredded or shelf-stable.
    • Lemon Zest: To obtain that delightful citrus note without running the risk of a curdled sauce, we're merely going to use the zest of the lemon.
    • Cajun Seasoning: The heart of the sauce. Most blends mix paprika, garlic and onion powder, oregano, thyme and cayenne for a bold, smoky heat.
    • Fresh Parsley or Basil: A sprinkle on top adds color and a fresh, herby note that balances all that richness.

See the recipe card below for precise ingredients and measurements.

    📖 Variations

This rich and creamy alfredo sauce is perfect on its own, but the way you flavor it and what you top it with, like chicken, shrimp, turkey, or even some chicken sausage, will make a huge difference in the end. Here are some variation ideas you can try.

    • Seafood Twist: Replace chicken with shrimp for a Cajun Shrimp Alfredo.
    • Vegetarian Option: Skip the chicken and add bell peppers, zucchini noodles, or your favorite vegetables.
    • Spice Level: Adjust the cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes to your preferred level of heat.
    • Smoked Chicken Sausage: Add sliced smoked chicken sausage (chicken andouille is great here) for an extra layer of Cajun flavor.
    • Milder Sauce: Start with half the Cajun seasoning, or use a gentler Creole blend, and add more to taste.
    • Lighter Version: Swap the cream for low-fat or almond milk thickened with a little cornstarch slurry. It's lighter, though not quite as rich.
    • Add Greens: Stir in a handful of baby spinach or some sautéed mushrooms at the end to make it heartier.

    ‍ 👩🏻‍🍳 How to Make

In this section, I can't wait to show you how easy it is to make this cajun alfredo sauce pasta.

I make it by preparing the sauce first and then mixing everything with it at the end, but I'll give you some pointers if you want to step things up a notch.

*Be sure to check the recipe card down below for the full ingredients list & instructions!*

farfalle pasta in boiling water in a medium saucepan.

    STEP 1

Prepare the Pasta. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt. Cook pasta until al dente, according to package instructions.

Diced onion and minced garlic sautéing in a skillet.

    STEP 2

Cook the Chicken. Season the chicken breasts with Cajun seasoning. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat olive oil.

TIP: Don't overcook the pasta, it can be very starchy and you don't want that in your meal! just cook it according to the packaging (al dente).

Pouring heavy cream over sautéed diced onion and minced garlic.

    STEP 3

Heat the butter until it becomes foamy and the solid white milk begins to bubble. Make sure to add the cream before it browns and cook over low heat to prevent the burning of the butter.

    STEP 4

Add salt now if your Cajun spice is unsalted, and stir in the heavy cream. Simmer it for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring constantly, until it coats the back of a spoon without becoming too thick.

TIP: Some cajun seasonings can be very salty, so keep an eye on it and taste your sauce as you go.

    STEP 5

Take the sauce from the stove and add the zest of the lemon. Whisk in the parmesan cheese little by little until it melts and becomes smooth.

    STEP 6

Taste it and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

After that, you may use it any way you'd like or toss it with your cooked pasta!

    🥣 How to Serve

I usually pour this Cajun cream sauce with some shrimp or chicken over my gluten-free pasta dish. I enjoy adding a few vegetables, such as chopped blanched green beans or steamed broccoli.

However, there are a ton of more delectable uses! It could serve as the foundation for baked macaroni and cheese.

For an immediate taste boost, drizzle it over fish, grilled poultry, or roasted vegetables. Make a white pizza using it as the sauce. Mix it with grits or creamy polenta. It even works wonderfully as a dipping sauce for homemade gluten-free biscuits.

You could also serve it with chicken breast such as my delicious crispy chicken parmesan, or some grilled chicken like this grilled buffalo chicken.

    • Side Salad: A fresh caprese salad with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella is a bright, cool partner for the spicy sauce.
    • Roasted Vegetables: Parmesan-roasted broccoli or garlicky pan-fried mushrooms round out the plate nicely.

    💭 Recipe Pro Tips

    • As you add the parmesan cheese, stir the sauce regularly to maintain a smooth texture and avoid clumps.

    ❄️ Storage and Freezer Instructions

If you have any sauce left over, put it in the refrigerator for up to three days in an airtight container. Reheat the sauce slowly over low heat, thinning it out if needed with a little milk or cream. To keep the sauce from splitting, don't boil it.

    • Freezing: We don't recommend it. Cream sauces like this one tend to split when they thaw, so enjoy it fresh or keep leftovers in the fridge.
    • Leftover Pasta: Sauced pasta softens overnight and loses its al dente bite, but it still makes a tasty lunch the next day.

    📋 Recipe FAQ

    FAQs

How do I thin out Alfredo sauce?

To thin out your cajun alfredo sauce, stir in a splash of the water you cooked the pasta in. Add it a little at a time, since it's salty.

Can you use half and half to make alfredo sauce?

Yes, you can use half and half! The sauce will be thinner and a little less rich, so let it simmer a bit longer or add a little more Parmesan to thicken it.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Keep in mind that Alfredo sauce is best served fresh, but yes, you definitely can! Just store the sauce separately in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Simply reheat your sauce alongside fresh cooked pasta and that's it! Bon Appétit!

Can I use pre-shredded Parmesan cheese instead of freshly grated?

You can, but freshly grated melts much more smoothly. Bagged Parmesan is coated with anti-caking agents that can make the sauce grainy.

What pasta shapes work best with Cajun Alfredo sauce?

Fettuccine and linguine are classic, since their wide strands hold the creamy sauce. Penne and rigatoni work great too, and zucchini noodles make a lower-carb option.

How do I prevent the sauce from curdling?

Keep the heat low so the cream only gently simmers, and use lemon zest rather than lemon juice, which can make hot cream curdle.

How do I adjust the spice level of this sauce?

Start with less Cajun seasoning and add more a teaspoon at a time until it's as spicy as you like. A pinch of cayenne gives extra kick.

Easy Homemade Cajun Chicken Alfredo Sauce (Creamy Recipe)

Savory, fresh, and smoky! Rich and creamy, this Cajun alfredo sauce is ideal served over pasta. The addition of a little zest from a lemon lifts the sauce and makes it ideal for serving with grilled fish or steamed veggies. Although store-bought Cajun seasoning is an option, homemade seasoning offers a more robust taste.

    INGREDIENTS

    • 8 ounces of fettuccine pasta or pasta of your choice
    • 2 tablespoons of butter
    • 1 tablespoon of Cajun seasoning adjust to your preferred level of spiciness
    • 1 cup of heavy cream
    • 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
    • lemon zest
    • Salt and black pepper to taste
    • Fresh parsley or basil for garnish optional

    INSTRUCTIONS

    • In a large skillet over low heat, melt the butter until it starts to foam, forming white bubbles on top.
    • Add the Cajun seasoning and heavy cream and stir. If necessary, add salt. Simmer for five to six minutes on low heat.
    • After turning off the heat, add the lemon zest to the pan. Add the cheese little by little, stirring to ensure the sauce is smooth and the parmesan is well melted. Add salt to taste.
    • Toss the pasta in the pan to coat it or serve it whichever you like.

    NOTES

Please take note of the salt content of seasonings purchased from stores. Most aren't spice blends; they're seasoning salts. For optimal results, I suggest utilizing the spice blend specified.
Cream that is bubbling shouldn't have lemon juice added to it since it could curdle. Simply use the zest of the lemon.
You can dilute the sauce with a small amount of pasta water if it's too thick.
Cajun Chicken Pasta: Add 12 to 16 ounces of cooked pasta and 2 cups of shredded chicken to make this into a quick dinner. And voilà! Pasta with Cajun chicken. Additions such as frozen peas and spinach are also excellent.
